Our Story

It all started with a trip to a Maasai village in the heart of Tanzania

In 2019, my family and I took a trip to the heart of Tanzania. As our tour guide led us through the arid landscape abundant with zebras, giraffes, and lions, we came across a small isolated village of the Maasai tribe. It was composed of a maze of mud huts with several dozen lively inhabitants scattered throughout. The villagers were so enthusiastic about the arrival of visitors that they decided to put on a show for us, and before we knew it, we were surrounded by bright flashes of colorful fabric as they performed a traditional dance.

After the show was over, the Maasai were excited to show us their homes and daily activities. We came upon a large round table in the very center of the village which was filled with beautiful handmade items. There were beaded bracelets and necklaces, intricate wooden carved safari animals, and figurines made of colorful soapstone for sale. As we continued viewing these pieces on display, we were in awe of the villagers’ masterful artistry. Our tour guide informed us that selling these pieces allowed the Maasai to obtain clean water. We bought a ton of their crafts, not only because they were beautiful, but also in hopes of supporting their needs.

Two years later, African Goods for Good was created. It is our mission to help the Maasai get the clean water they need by helping them and other African artisans increase their sales, not only to tourists, but to people all over the world. African Goods for Good donates profits to the Maasai Water Project charity which is dedicated to resolving the villagers’ clean water problem. For every $40, one family is supplied with safe water for a month; $500 provides an entire village with safe water for a month; $1800 can provide a village with its own water storage tank in order to get through future dry seasons. You can make a difference in the life of the Maasai villagers with your purchase.

Update: profits from our sales have allowed us to provide a Maasai village with a water storage tank! Thanks to your purchases, these villagers will be able to obtain clean drinking water for future dry seasons.
